Binghamton, New York—1991

David sat in Broome County Family Court with his mother, his sister Anna, and a social worker. From across the room he could see Floyd Kenyon’s flannel shirt and fiery beard. It was the first time he had seen his father in two years. He had thought about him from time to time after his ninth birthday, and, when he did, he wondered why he wasn’t around. Maybe, he thought, his father hated him like everyone else did.

The judge said something that David did not hear; he had been too focused on his dad. After court was dismissed, David followed his mother and the lady from social services up the stairs to the parking garage. He saw Floyd a few flights ahead of them and took off running. “Dad!” he called out. “Dad!” The words echoed against the concrete. His mother and the woman yelled after him, but David did not listen.

He caught up to Floyd and threw his eleven-year-old arms around the man’s neck.

“Where have you been?” he cried. “Take me with you! I want to go with you, Dad!”

The man looked down at his son, then looked away.

“You can’t come with me,” he said.

Pamela caught up to them and pulled David in the other direction. Floyd walked to his car, now a beige Ford Escort, and drove off.

It would be the last time he ever saw his father.
